STARTING OUT
You can spend a surprising amount of money on surf gear before you've worked out what you actually need. Start with the basics and add equipment as it becomes useful.
For a beginner, stability and buoyancy generally matter more than having the smallest or most advanced board.
Think location, season, water temperature and fit — not simply the thickest suit you can afford.
Fin size, shape and setup can change how a board feels.
Match the leash to the board you're riding. This is basic equipment, not an optional extra.
You need wax, traction or the appropriate combination for your board.
